‘Your City is a Public Orchard’ is a hand-screenprinted, hand-bound, hand-folded, and hand-letterpressed foraging guide, produced in Salford by the very talented Textbook Studio. We think the combination of good, practical information on identifying and using edible wild plants with beautiful, traditional craftsmanship make this a very special little book.
The designers say: ‘Though there are lots of resources on edible wild food and what you can do with it, we found that they’re often in a large books or online, which isn’t ideal for actual foraging. We wanted to create a small guide to help a beginner get started with foraging. The guide takes you through how to identify a few of the more common wild foods you can eat, which parts are edible, what seasons they can be found in, and how you can use them to replace other ingredients in a selection of recipes. There’s also a bit about how to make Birch Sap Wine.’
The book is small enough to fit in your pocket but sturdy enough to withstand lots of use, which is why it has been bound with thick grey-board and adhesive bookbinding cloth. The inside is folded into a concertina, allowing the information you need whilst out foraging to be easily accessible, but the recipes hidden away until you have more room to unfold the guide at home.
